For shops, restaurants and hotels

Video screening for retail and hospitality hiring

Hiring between shifts leaves little room for repeated introductory calls. A short recorded screen can collect relevant answers while the manager keeps the store, restaurant or hotel running.

Keep the exercise practical. Applicants should be able to explain an ordinary situation without a perfect recording setup or previous experience with your brand.

Use a situation the person might face on a shift

  • A customer is waiting and the item requested is unavailable. What would you explain and check next?
  • Your shift is ending while a guest request is unresolved. What would you tell the next colleague?
  • Several customers need help at once. What would affect the order in which you respond?

Give the policy information needed for the answer. If sector experience is optional, accept examples from other settings that demonstrate the same relevant skill.

Keep the recording request proportionate

Ask only what you need to decide whether to meet. Explain the effort, deadline and reply contact. Use video for spoken explanation when that matters to the role.

Discuss shift availability directly. Do not infer reliability or service skill from a recording background. Offer a contact for applicants who need another way to participate.

Make the manager’s review useful

Review against the same criteria within a hiring round. Record evidence of service judgement, practical next steps and clear handovers. Use the live stage for gaps and the candidate’s questions.

Hirevly collects answers and supports team ratings and notes. Keep hands-on tasks, required qualifications and discussions about the shift pattern in your hiring process.
